Amphioxus, a basal chordate, is the best available proxy for the proximate invertebrate ancestor of vertebrates. It has a vertebrate-like body plan including a circulatory system with an organization similar to that of vertebrates (Moller and Philpott 1973).However, amphioxus lacks lymphoid organs and has no free circulating blood cells (Moller and Philpott 1973; Yuan et al. 2015a).
